What do you think being creative means?
I love this question. Being creative means that one can enter a timeless moment where self-expression is automatic, whether it be an artistic or academic endeavour. It is an activity fuelled by passion.
How do you include creativity in your life?
In every way possible. Playing with children and making up stories or games; shooting abstract photography full of colour and innovative design; in writing, in playing music, in filmmaking and in finding new ways to do activities that I’ve always done.
What are your thoughts on how your life has influenced your creative imagination, and how your creative imagination has influenced your life?
I believe that our creative impulses are nourished by the lives we lead. Creativity is a muscle that needs frequent exercising. At first, it can feel awkward with unsatisfying results, but with continued use, we begin to develop a stronger creative reach and begin to find new possibilities. It takes practice and variety...like sex! :-)
What, if any, exercises do you do to get into a creative mode?
I find too little food (as in low blood sugar) or too much food (as in overeating or eating excessive sugar or fat) a definite impediment because you cannot feel very present in your own body when hormones are being activated by blood sugar irregularities. The best way that I’ve found to fuel my creative pulse is by focusing on the task that I am doing. I might do some physical exercise such as yoga, deep breathing or some meditating. Sometimes, I just begin the creative activity and allow the readiness to simply manifest.
How important do you think creativity is in life?
The creative impulse is life itself. It is when you are so fully engaged in the moment, you become unaware of time and remain in a void where you are being nourished by a hidden energy source. I think it is also a vital healing resource and another way to bolster our faith.
