What do you think being creative means?
Rilke wrote: “Perhaps creating something is nothing but an act of profound remembrance”. Being creative means tapping into some innermost realm of yourself and not being afraid to leak it to the world. It means cracking open and letting all the messy stuff inside spill out. It means thinking about old topics in new ways. There’s an element of danger to it, which is why I think adults shut it off, afraid of being judged. We walk through life thickening a protective shell and creativity comes when we’re able to tap into the self that existed before - being brave so that we can express all that we’ve learned in the process of living.
How do you include creativity in your life?
Oh, man. I’m so lucky that I do in so many ways! I write. I’m not a ‘force myself to write’ kind of writer, I let it come as it will. Sometimes it’s for others, like my Blog, “Acting Like Sarah”. And sometimes it’s just for me to see. And I’m an Actor. I use past experience and empathy to develop characters and situations. This is always some expression of who I am. Shaping a realistic scene or relationship takes serious creative work. And starting my own nutrition business is proving to take some intense creative thinking also. The basis of our company is that it’s an out-of-the-box approach to a usually fairly banal subject, Health and Wellness.
What thoughts do you have as to how your life has influenced your creative imagination, and how your creative imagination has influenced your life?
All of my creativity stems from past experience and the life I’ve lived. My creativity usually comes in the form of some type of emotional expression. And all of that comes from living. And my life, in turn, is set up to allow space for creativity. I try to keep open to new experiences and new feelings to facilitate creativity.
What, if any, exercises do you do to get into a creative mode?
Music is big for me. When I’m feeling less than inspired, I try to find new music. I sit by the water in Brooklyn, look at the skyline, and listen to music. I also try to get out into the world and meet new people all the time. I get inspired by different types of people. Random conversations with strangers on the streets of NY always spark a creative energy for me. And I write. I try to get my thoughts out so my brain doesn’t get cluttered with too much. Make space for new inspiration.
How important do you think creativity is in life?
So important! Creativity is life. I hate when people say “I’m not creative”. Creativity takes so many forms and can be expressed in so many ways. You should see my Dad pack the car for a car trip. That takes some freakin’ creativity! Life doesn’t work without creativity. And everyone has it in them if they would just allow themselves the chance to express it.
