What do you think being creative means?
Being creative is like picking an orange off a tree. There is an understanding of a natural process at play - growth from seedling to fruit, not forced, just flowing right through to fruition.
How do you include creativity in your life?
Whether I am in my Pottery Studio, sewing or crafting leather I am always creating, always jotting down ideas or images. Life itself is creativity, because each day is different for us all.
What are your thoughts on how your life has influenced your creative imagination, and how your creative imagination has influenced your life?
Having the experience of living in the tropics for 15 years was a big influence on my ideas and colours - from the sand-cays, to the reef, to snorkeling amongst the coral and reefs, my travels to England, Europe, Bali, Cambodia and Thailand. Just being amongst the culture and history makes me want to take clay moulds of all the ancient relics I come across.
On the reverse of that, arriving in Australia as a child from England and having to attend 6 different state schools because of my father’s advancing teaching career, had a big impact upon me. Reading books played a huge role in my life...imagination was my escape. Hence I always wanted to learn more, see more places, surround myself with inspiring people and be where I felt serenity and happiness.
What, if any, exercises do you do to get into a creative mode?
Sleep - between sleeping and awakening, for me that’s when ideas come. Meditate - peace not chatter produces clarity, and with clarity comes amazing insights. Nature - from Zephyrus, to water, to birdsong, to breathing, they all help get me in the creative mode.
How important do you think creativity is in life?
Without creativity life as we know it would stand still and stagnate. It’s that simple.
