What do you think being creative means?
I think being creative is just having the ability to recognize when you can question the givens in life. If you step out of reality for a second and try to discover how anything came to be, then you create the possibility to alter its design path. To me, assigning the word 'creative' to an object or idea does not equate to good or bad, but is instead the recognition of a conscious effort to be different.
How do you include creativity in your life?
I try to apply a critical curiosity to my environment and, if I think I have the time and means, I try to tinker with everything. Whether it's taking apart an old toy, 'fixing' a piece of equipment, hacking a digital instance, or simply thinking about the origins of everyday objects and behaviors, I like to let my mind wander from place to place while trying my best to ignore stereotypes and time limits. This curiosity definitely gets me into trouble sometimes, but I think it's worth it because you never know what you're going to discover.
I also try to apply to open calls of all shapes, sizes, and formats. This forces me to think about a particular topic or medium that may be outside of my comfort zone. And while usually nothing comes out of the experience [other than the joy of the exercise], every now and then someone gives me the opportunity to turn my idea into reality.
What are your thoughts on how your life has influenced your creative imagination, and how your creative imagination has influenced your life?
I'd like to think that simply being more open to creative thinking has sparked the recursive influence of creativity. Perhaps I am more willing to seek out interesting situations because of subconscious memories from things that I've thought up before, and that those things were created because of something I experienced in the past. As long as I retain this desire to create and to see the creations of others I think I'll be alright.
What, if any, exercises do you do to get into a creative mode?
At night I like to let my mind wander. Just before bed I'll close my eyes and start to describe what I 'see' in my head. Often times it sounds like pure insanity, and maybe it is, but I believe it lets the unconscious part of me come out to play and that it influences my analytical conscious. Being a more logical and orderly person by nature, this exercise helps to reassure me that I am still capable of illogical, unfounded abstraction.
How important do you think creativity is in life?
Without creativity innovation and change would be left to chance.
