What do you think being creative means?
That is a massive question and I will preface my answer by saying that I only know what creativity means to me. That being said, I think creativity is life! It is a culmination of evolution to move past function and into the realm of beauty and truth. Like spiritual progress, creativity moves past our everyday needs and is an act that seems to come from the less definable but clearly present parts of this world.
How do you include creativity in your life?
Well as an artist I have to be creative on a daily basis, I realise that is a given. So I try to adapt my creativity into other aspects of being an artist. Whether that is how I engage with people, either online or in person, about my work. Or perhaps it's about being creative with the business side of being an artist. It all ties up together. And the way I encourage this is to approach any form of creativity with an openness that allows problems to find their own solution. Sometimes it feels as if I just need to listen, move aside and let the solution through.
What are your thoughts on how your life has influenced your creative imagination, and how your creative imagination has influenced your life?
The more I practice being creative, the more my life and my creative imagination become a single thing. After a while nothing passes by on a single day that doesn't feed into both my life and creativity. And for me there is a third route that is informed by daily life and that is my spirituality. No single act stands alone, but inevitably feeds my life, my creativity and my spiritual outlook. Every instance is an experience, an inspiration and a teaching.
What, if any, exercises do you do to get into a creative mode?
I take a bath. For some reason, it is the most effective way to get me focused and to allow for the creativity to flow. I always save up ideas I want to work through and then run a bath and the ideas just seem to come to the surface. I would like to start using meditation to serve the same purpose, but have yet to manage to fit it into my life routine. Hopefully in the future!
How important do you think creativity is in life?
It is not necessary, not in any great measure, beyond everyday problem solving. But when it comes to experiencing life and all it has to offer, it is so important. For me, creativity has been the single act that has cut through the confusion of being alive and has shown me what life is about and how, as an individual, I can utilise my existence to go beyond myself and make something that can lead to growth and change for all life and all the universe. And, at the end of the day, it is fun to be creative and makes for a happier life. So that is reason enough to set some time aside to be creative!
