6-Time Oscar, Grammy & Golden Globe Nominated Hit Songwriter
What do you think being creative means?
Trying to “create” something out of nothing! A new song, story, script, approach to a problem at work; a different way to interact with someone you love; something that you haven’t - maybe no one has - thought of before. Creativity is by no means limited to so-called “creatives” - e.g., writers, directors, actors. Anyone and everyone can be creative if they want to be.
How do you include creativity in your life?
I’m a writer and creativity IS my life to a large extent! No real boundaries for me between “work” and “real life”, but even when I am not writing I love coming up with new ideas and approaches. It can be as simple as a new type of workout at the gym, or an out of the box surprise gift for my wife Stacy Lou. :)
What are your thoughts on how your life has influenced your creative imagination, and how your creative imagination has influenced your life?
I’m kind of with Barney the dinosaur on this one (booming voice): Use your imagination kids! Although unquestionably my life influences my creativity, I don’t feel an artist should feel compelled to tell the so-called “truth” (whatever that is!) of our own lives. On the other hand, of course, we all write about ourselves - our work reflects who we are, even if it does not explicitly tell our specific stories. In terms of vice versa, my creativity has influenced my life on both a global level - allowing me to work with incredible artists and writers and to touch so many people with my music - and on a more intimate one: by giving me so much joy day to day and moment to moment.
What, if any, exercises do you do to get into a creative mode?
None! Just sit down and start banging away. And when blocked: going to the bathroom always seems to help haha!
How important do you think creativity is in life?
Oh man - in my life, it’s HUGE! See all the above answers!
